DC404 Hybrid Meeting – December 21st

Tuesday, December 17th, 2024 by narknet

Saturday December 21st is your DC404 hybrid meeting

.

All ages/skill levels welcome. No dues, feel free to bring new friends.

DC404 is experimenting with running hybrid meetings, so like all hacking, we expect issues, but we will improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Our in person meeting is at Manual’s Tavern and our online meeting is via Big Blue Button.

The meeting speaker (when we have one) will be streamed to both the in person and online meetings.

.

The December DC404 meetings are reserved for the Annual DC404 Geek Gift Guide.

Bring your list of must have items. If you already have the item(s), show them to us so we can ooh and awe.

This is more like “show and tell” so a formal presentation is not required but if you have slides, you can share your screen.

dcØde (one of our members) put up a spreadsheet to reduce duplication and give us time to buy items for Christmas. To see the format for entries check out the previous year’s tab.

DC404 Hybrid Meeting – May 18th

Monday, May 13th, 2024 by narknet

Saturday May 18th is your DC404 hybrid meeting

The meeting speaker (when we have one) will be streamed to both the in person and online meetings.

.

Shelby Wheeler will be presenting: Privacy by Design: Building Trust from the Inside Out

Have you ever used an app that feels intrusive, where privacy seems like an afterthought? That’s where privacy engineering comes in. We’re not just about settings and menus; we’re the architects who build privacy right into the core of technology.

Imagine designing a beautiful, functional house. A standard builder might focus on aesthetics, but a privacy-conscious architect would also consider hidden compartments and secure access points. Similarly, privacy engineers go beyond surface-level features. We design the entire system – from the user interface (front-end) to the data storage (back-end) – with privacy as a fundamental principle.

.

My name is Shelby Wheeler I’m a Privacy Engineer at Google with a passion for tackling complex challenges at the forefront of technology. I hold a CISSP and spend my weekends doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and eating hot pot.

Inside of Google, I am in Workspace where I navigate the novel privacy implications of emerging technologies, such as Gen-Ai, shaping data governance and safeguarding children’s data globally. My team’s work touches over 3 billion consumer and enterprise users daily. Prior to this, I honed my cyber security expertise in insider threat mitigation and data loss prevention at The Coca-Cola Company.

My diverse skillset spans coding, cloud engineering, risk management, machine learning, encryption, and translation of privacy regulations into design and architecture review, all while allowing me to bridge the gap between security and innovation.

Join me as I explore the ever-evolving landscape of data privacy!

DC404 Hybrid Meeting – April 20th

Thomas Breland will be presenting: How to Pass the CISSP (Clickbait)

Whether for school or for professional development, exam preparation is often difficult for the wrong reasons. Studying should not be difficult, learning should not be difficult, and this presentation is about what works, what doesn’t, and why. This is not a typical studies skills class on how to take better notes, read a table of contents, or write an outline; this is how to accomplish more, in less time, with minimal guidance. Incidentally, there may also be a slide about the CISSP exam.

Thomas Breland is a CISSP and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate with a bachelor’s in computer science. He overcame years of educational neglect to become a musician, warrior, scholar, and – perhaps most proudly – a transient DC404 n00b. A former bass player, Combat Engineer, Electronic Warfare Sergeant, Signal Officer, Special Reaction Team member, and software engineer, he likes to spend his free time dabbling in foreign languages, playing guitar, riding motorcycles, snowboarding, and doing crochet; he also occasionally does security-related work.

.

We will have time after the presentation for people to to share what they are working on. Your project doesn’t have to be complete and slides are not required (like show-n-tell).
