Sach will present: MAVSH – Attacking from Above

Over the course of 2020 and 2021, drone enthusiasts and the FAA have been locked in a series of legal battles over the future of unmanned aviation.

New regulations and restrictions, such as Remote Identification, aim to leave drone and model aviation hobbyists with a grim choice: incur countless financial costs, or lose the ability to fly freely.

Not only do these regulations impact hobbyists, they also restrict our ability to use drones as recon and payload delivery tools, but the FAA gave us a loophole.

In this talk, I’ll share my knowledge of the MAVLink protocol and how it can be modified to take advantage of that loophole. I’ll also show you how to build a drone capable of 20+ minute flights, potentially multiple miles of range, and hosting a Raspberry Pi 0 W onboard, enabling remote command execution without the use of onboard WiFi or cellular networks ALL while exploiting that loophole.

Come learn how and why the FAA “Can’t Stop the Signal”!

Scott Jones will present: Negative Space Signaling: A Threat to Election Integrity?

The aftermath of the 2020 election in Georgia has produced many questions regarding election integrity, including the integrity of the state’s recently purchased Ballot Marking Devices, used statewide, which produce paper records for each voter.

In the interest of improving election transparency, there have been calls to release digital scans of all ballots, which are presumably de-identified. However, it will be demonstrated that markings in the unused space of the paper ballots can allow, either intentionally or unintentionally, “out of band” messages to be passed through publicly disclosed digital copies of the ballots, which can then threaten election integrity.

Scott M. Jones is acting director of Electronic Frontiers Georgia, a local activist group promoting and advocating for the protection of online civil liberties. Mr. Jones is also the Director of the Electronic Frontiers Forums track at DragonCon, a lecture series covering the intersection of technology, law, activism, and society. Mr. Jones has been involved in advocacy for Internet- and technology-related civil liberties since the mid-1990’s. In his day job, Mr. Jones is a system administrator for a small startup and consulting firm in the insurance industry.

Tracie Martin will be presenting: OSINT and Nation State Grooming

We’ve all seen really cool OSINT talks, people can grab basically all the details of your life and lay it out for the world to see, but what’s often missing from these talks is the why? So many times when speaking on this topic I hear people say “So what?” I don’t care if people know my birthday, or my address…the threat isn’t real. This talk draws on my experience at NATO Counterintelligence where we used similar training to help soldiers and families resist nation-state grooming and protect their families.

.

Tracie Martin is currently a Principal Security Engineer in IoT, working to improve the security of IoT devices in the cloud. She also founded and runs DefendCon, a womxn centered hacking conference which seeks to provide technical content for womxn hackers in a space free of violence and harassment. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force, as well as having an extensive career in DoD as a contractor and Department of Army Civilian. Her previous experience includes years working for the Missile Defense Agency helping to secure systems like the Sea-Based X-Band Radar and the Kinetic Interceptor. She spent four years at Allied Command Counterintelligence protecting our nation’s intelligence systems from cyber attack. She’s also worked for several of the world’s top companies including Microsoft, Google, Twitter and Adobe, where she helped protect billions of users by doing application security incident response and security feature work in Microsoft Office, managing the design and deployment of Google’s Android Security Test Suite, and improving developer velocity by simplifying security requirements at Adobe.

Phillip Wylie will be presenting: Inside The Mind of a Threat Actor: Beyond Pentesting

Red team is a commonly misunderstood offensive security discipline. Red team has been used as a general term for all areas of offensive security just as blue team for defensive security. True red teaming goes Beyond Pentesting and into more adversarial emulation. While there are overlapping skills, there are differences that will be discussed as Phillip shares his experience of going from a pentester to a red teamer. In this talk, you will learn about the different areas that make up red team operations, common tools, and the path to becoming a red teamer. In this presentation, you will learn about resources helpful for a path into red teaming.

.

Phillip is a passionate offensive security professional with over two decades of information technology and cybersecurity experience. His specialties include penetration testing and application security. When Phillip is not hacking, he is educating others about pentesting and web application pentesting at the college level and during workshops at conferences and other events. His passion for education and pentesting inspired him to found The Pwn School Project, an education-focused cybersecurity organization. Phillip coauthored the book, “The Pentester Blueprint: Starting a Career as an Ethical Hacker” based on his conference talk on starting a career as a pentester. He is an Innocent Lives Foundation Ambassador, and a Hacking is NOT a Crime Advocate. Phillip’s uncommon journey into the field of cybersecurity is preceded by his colorful past as a pro wrestler, where he once wrestled a bear.

DC404 Virtual Meeting – December 19th

Tuesday, December 15th, 2020 by narknet

Saturday December 19th is your DC404 virtual meeting

.

The DC404 Big Blue Button meeting space is graciously hosted by DC404 member npcomp.

Big Blue Button is a WebRTC based open source video teleconferencing platform supported by all major browsers, including Chrome, FireFox, Safari, and Safari Mobile. For best results on desktop and laptops, Chrome or Firefox is recommended. For Chromebooks the built-in Chrome browser is recommended.

The meeting space will open at 13:00 on Saturday so that people will have time to connect and work out any technical issues.

The meeting will start at 14:00.

No registration or email address is required, just enter your preferred handle. To join the meeting from your browser use this link:

.

The December DC404 meeting is reserved for the Annual DC404 Geek Gift Guide.

Bring your list of must have items. If you already have the item(s), show them to us so we can ooh and awe.

This is more like “show and tell” so a formal presentation is not required but if you have slides, you can share your screen.

dcØde (one of our members) put up a spreadsheet to reduce duplication and give us time to buy items for Christmas. To see the format for entries check out the previous year’s tab.

DC404 Annual Geek Gift Guide

.

We will have time after the Gift Guide for people to to share what they are working on. Your project doesn’t have to be complete and slides are not required (like show-n-tell).

.

We will be running the NetKotH CTF.

If you would like to play along in the CTF follow these instructions (http://koth.userserviceable.com/netkoth.html) and hack away with your favorite tools such as Kali Linux, Parrot Linux, or ArchStrike Linux.
