Wednesday, June 17th, 2026 by narknet

Saturday June 20th is your DC404 hybrid meeting

.

All ages/skill levels welcome. No dues, feel free to bring new friends.

DC404 is experimenting with running hybrid meetings, so like all hacking, we expect issues, but we will improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Our in person meeting is at Manual’s Tavern and our online meeting is via Big Blue Button.

The meeting speaker (when we have one) will be streamed to both the in person and online meetings.

.

James Dutton will be presenting: The Legal and Constitutional Issues of License Plate Readers

.

Much has been said about the Fourth Amendment considerations of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR’s), but there may be other issues as well, including presumption of innocence, evidential chain of custody, security exceptions and third-party auditing, and stretching the “Plain View Rule” to the breaking point. Join us as local attorney James “The Geek Lawyer” Dutton explains it all.

.

Born and raised in Griffin, Georgia, Commissioner James Dutton is dedicated to his community. Before graduating from Griffin High School in 2000, he began attended Gordon State College at the age of 15 on a full ride academic scholarship then subsequently won a federal scholarship to spend his senior year in Germany attending an advanced school there as a foreign exchange student. He returned to Europe shortly after graduation as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in The Netherlands, Belgium, Northern France, and Germany working with refugees from 93 different countries.

He later attended Georgia State University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in economics, focusing on healthcare economics, public sector economics, and human resource economics. He also minored in urban policy studies, specializing in nonprofit leadership. Although initially pursuing a PhD in international economics, he chose instead to attend Georgia State’s College of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate, along with a Master’s in Public Administration from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.

In addition to being a partner with Dutton & Dutton, James founded TheGeekLawyer.com, a law firm representing Geek related small businesses. A recognized expert in both the law and the junction of surveillance and privacy, as well as a founder of BanishBigBrother.com, a 501(c)3 advocating against the encroaching surveillance state(s), James has challenged the Georgia School Zone Safety Law to the Georgia Supreme Court, twice, and has testified as an expert on the subject before the State Senate Subcommittee overseeing the program.

Beyond his professional career, Commissioner Dutton is actively involved in the community. He served as a BSA scoutmaster for Troop 14 and has been a member of several civic and fraternal organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, Ringgold Masonic Lodge, Griffin York Rite, Griffin Historical Society, The Griffin Downtown Association, Mainstreet Board, The Griffin-Spalding Airport Authority, and the Griffin Knights Templar Commandary. He also co-founded the Spalding County Bar Association, founded and coached the award-winning Spalding County High School Model United Nations team, and served as a boys’ youth minister and Sunday School teacher at his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Commissioner Dutton and his wife, Kristen, each run their own businesses in downtown Griffin-her a CPA tax firm, and him a law firm. They have two children, Elizabeth and Ty.

.

We will have time after the presentation for people to share what they are working on. Your project doesn’t have to be complete and slides are not required (like show-n-tell).

.

The in person meeting and online meeting spaces will open at 13:00 on Saturday so that people will have time to connect and work out any technical issues.

The meeting will start at 14:00.
